Default 2010 Presidential Election: The New Republicans

Since I didn't know quite where to put this, I decided to add some suggestions for the now-famous West Wing 2010 Presidential Election thread here:

POLITICO
The New Republicans
In the wake of Secretary of State Arnold Vinick’s 2006 presidential campaign and current President Glenn Allen Walken’s historic 2010 win, a number of “New Republicans” have emerged as potential standard-bearers for the GOP. Here, then, is a selection of leading figures in the Republican Party who could have big futures ahead of them.

The Veterans

Governor Daniel Hemingway

The current governor of the state of Louisiana, Mr. Hemingway was born in Baton Rouge, where he served as District Attorney before being elected as a replacement for Governor Robert Ritchie in 2002.

Mr. Hemingway is a former alcoholic, having been sober since 1982. He is known as a collector of rare books and likes to play the clarinet. He was one of the guest speakers at the 2010 Republican National Convention and is considered a potential candidate should President Walken not run for a second term.

Senator Donald C. Reagan

Like former Congressman Roger Baker, Senator Reagan is a native of Michigan, where he served as Lieutenant Governor before being elected to the Senate in 1992. Known for his strong sense of personal morality and ethics, he has been called the “moral center” of the Senate.

Mr. Reagan served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He considers Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt to be his biggest influences. Senator Reagan attended the 2010 Republican National Convention and is considered a potential frontrunner for the Republican nomination in 2014 should President Walken not run.

Senator Grace Ripley

Senator Ripley was born in New York City and attended Stanford. She was first elected to the Senate in 1998, after having served in the state legislature. She is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and is currently serving as Chairman. Mrs. Ripley was thought to have been on the short list for possible successors to current Secretary of State Arnold Vinick and is still considered a leading candidate for Secretary of State. Mrs. Ripley has been considered a potential candidate for the Republican nomination in 2014, should President Walken decide not to run.

Senator Marsha Hewes

Marsha Baker Hewes was born Marsha Baker Wheaton in Greenwich, Connecticut in 1950. At a young age her family moved to Oregon. The daughter of a judge, Hewes was inspired to go into law, and graduated with a degree from the University of Oregon. Mrs. Hewes has been married to Albert Hewes, a district attorney, since 1977. They have one son, Chris, a member of the Portland City Council. Chris Hewes has recently gained attention through his support for gay rights and his intention of becoming the city’s first openly gay Mayor.

Career

Marsha Hewes was first elected to the state legislature in 1988. In 2002, she was elected Senator in a close race. Mrs. Hewes is known as a fiscal hawk, while supporting civil unions and other rights for gay couples. This has made her the target of criticism from former Reverend Don Butler and his conservative coalition. However, other pro-life Republicans, such as Ray Sullivan, have offered her their support should she run for the Republican nomination in 2014.

The New Kids

Michael Gustavo Fuentes

Senator Michael “Gus” Fuentes is a United States Senator representing the state of New Mexico. He is a member of the Republican Party and is considered a potential contender for the 2014 Republican Presidential nomination, should President Glenn AllenWalken not run for a second term.

Biography

Senator Fuentes was born in 1958 in Brooklyn, New York to an African American father and a Puerto Rican mother. His father was a heavy equipment operator while his mother worked for the Postal Service.

When he was young his parents divorced and his mother moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico. There, Fuentes attended New Mexico University’s School of Law. In 1984, he became a member of the Albuquerque city council.

Political Career

Fuentes was elected to the United States Senate in 2002, after having represented New Mexico’s 1st congressional district since 1996. He is currently the junior Senator from New Mexico.

Senator Fuentes has earned a reputation for caution, having voted on several safety measures in Congress. He has a penchant for yoga, which in itself makes him unusual among his Republican colleagues. He describes himself as a “Vinick Republican” and cites Dwight D. Eisenhower as one of his main influences. His reputation for rationality has earned him the nickname “Senator Spock” for his demeanor.

Edgar Luis Torres

Biography

Edgar Torres was born in 1971 in Los Angeles, California, graduating from the University of Southern California with a degree in law. In 2000 he was elected to represent California’s 48th Congressional district, becoming one of the California delegation’s youngest members.

Career

Rep. Torres has been called a “Republican Matthew Santos.” He is known for being highly intelligent as well as ambitious. Known as an independent, he has come to be associated with the Ray Sullivan wing of the Republican Party. In 2010, he spoke at the Republican National Convention, calling for comprehensive immigration reform. Like former President Santos in 2006, Torres is currently considered to be a long-shot contender for the Republican nomination in 2014.

Bill Bradley: President Walken is “Just Fine”

White House Press Secretary continued to try and tamp down rumors about President Walken’s health ahead of a meeting between Greek and Turkish leaders that Walken was scheduled to attend but which will now be overseen by Vice President Clark, Secretary of State Arnold Vinick and Defense Secretary Killner. This has fueled speculation over Walken’s health, as stories have emerged of a case of “West Wing Flu” that has apparently affected White House staffers. In a video of a press conference that has gone viral, Secretary Bradley can repeatedly be seen attempting to answer questions about the health of Walken, before tersely ending the presser by saying that the President was “Just fine,” noting that the President did appear at the White House for Independence Day celebrations.

GENERAL SURVIVES ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT

DAMASCUS-Syrian General Hafez Shishak, who has been preparing for upcoming elections scheduled for August, has survived an apparent assassination attempt in Damascus, according to a spokesman for Syria’s transitional government. The attack, which was in the form of a car bomb, caused significant outer damage to the former presidential palace that Shishak has been using as his headquarters. Although there were several injuries, surprisingly no one was killed.
Secretary of State Arnold Vinick, who is currently in Athens, sent word to Shishak expressing his relief that the General had survived and that the United States remained committed to supporting democratic reforms in the country. In spite of these reassurances, the attack underscores the continuing tensions that exist in the country as former Hassad loyalists demand a voice in the new government and have formed their own political party in response to what they claim are intentional delays in the election process.

Another suggestion for the thread? (Note: I changed Senator Reagan since Tom Selleck has already been cast as former Vice President Lewis Eisenhower, and made Marsha Hewes a Senator since Paul Chang is currently governor of Oregon.)

New CEO For Penetrobe Announced

Auburn Hills, Michigan-Michael Hunter has been named as the new CEO of Penetrobe Engineering following the resignation of Gerald McCoy, it has been learned. Gerald MCoy tendered his resignation late Friday for "health reasons," although it has been widely known that the scandals surrounding the company and former Congressman Roger Baker have taken a toll personally.

Mr. Hunter, who was Penetrobe's chief accounting executive during a series of investigations, oversaw the company's restructuring following bankruptcy. He was chosen in a unanimous vote by the Board of Directors.

"I'm honored to take this position, and hope that we can put the past behind us and restore the public's confidence in our company," Mr. Hunter said in a statement.

HUNDREDS FEARED DEAD IN TEXAS PRISON

Screen grab of ariel footage allegedly showing bodies of dead inmates being burned by prison guards at the Travis Correctional Facility

Brownsville, TX-Hundreds of inmates are believed to be dead and others missing following a power failure that left the inmates of the Travis Correctional Facility near Brownsville, Texas in soaring temperatures as a record-breaking heat wave struck much of the state this week, according to investigators from the Texas Attorney General's office.
The inmates-most of them younger men, the majority of hispanic descent-were mostly gang members and illegal immigrants. Many were crowded together in what have been described as "inhumane, unsanitary" conditions that contributed to the spread of diseases. Several prison guards have been arrested and the warden has resigned while Federal authorities take over the prison from the private security firm that had been contracted to run the prison.
Governor Phil Prior has issued a statement expressing his deep sadness and outrage at this incident, and has promised a full investigation.

Taylor Reid Hospitalized, Kennedy Cancels More Appearances

Washington, DC-Taylor Reid, host of the Taylor Reid show, has been hospitalized with what his doctors are describing as a case of "stomach flu," according to a show spokesperson. The show will air in repeats while Mr. Reid recovers from his illness.

In related news, Pittsburgh mayor and Democratic Senate candidate Jackson Kennedy has canceled at least three more campaign appearances that were scheduled for the upcoming week. Mr. Kennedy insists that he is still in the race "to the end," despite growing concerns over his health.

BAKER DEATH CHANGED TO "UNDETERMINED"

The death of Dorothy Baker, wife of former Vice President Eric Baker, has been changed from suicide to "undetermined," according to state authorities.

Mrs. Baker, who was discovered by the couple's housekeeper, was known to have a history of manic depressive disorder, however investigators have ruled that her death was not the result of suicide as originally reported. Mr. Baker has returned home for funeral arrangements while the investigation continues.

Well, from the site:

It looks like the theme of the 2014 election may be "Russell's Revenge."

From the thread:

President Walken Addresses The Nation on the State of his Health

Quote:
Good evening, my fellow Americans.

I wanted to speak to you tonight regards the continuing speculation over the future of my Presidency and my own personal health.

I can confirm that for the past few weeks I have been suffering with a cold virus, which had forced me to cancel several planned engagements. There is nothing wrong with my long term health. I have tonight asked my personal physician to release my latest medical report to you the American people. I have nothing to hide and it has been placed on the White House website.
I understand that my team in the White House have not delivered the best information to you, I have spoken to them, and they understand that we in the Walken White House are a team working for all the American people and frankly the performance of all of us has not been what is required.

Now to the question that everyone has been asking, will I seek a second term in 2014? Well tonight I come before you almost 18 months into my Presidency; I believe fundamentally that we are on the right track for our nation. It has meant taking some hard and difficult choices, and yes it has meant working with the Democratic controlled Congress. I am pleased with the work so far, and it in the economy we are being to see the fruits of our policies. I believe that we cannot change from the path we have chosen; to go back would mean disaster for us as a nation, and therefore I come before you tonight to state 100% that I will be seeking a second mandate from you, in 2014. I understand that this job you elected me to in November 2010 is a temp job, and I fully understand that is your right to sack me from that job, but I believe that it is your right to do so, it would not be right not to seek a second term, it will be down to me and my administration to prove we are worthy for a second four years to serve the American people.

In the coming months I will be working for you the American people to continue the path we have set out upon, it will not be easy but I will continue to serve all the people of these United States of America, whatever the burden, whatever the sacrifice that duty may require.

Thank you for listening.

Good night, God bless all of you and God bless the United States of America.

LAURENT DANZI FOUND DEAD

East Montrassa-Former opposition leader Laurent Danzi, who lost this country's 2011 presidential elections to incumbent president Joseph-Paul N'konho, has been found dead inside of his residence in the capitol, according to sources.
Mr. Danzi, who along with many others had accused Nkonho of rigging the elections with support from the current U.S. administration, had reportedly been planning on making another run for the presidency and was going to call for international observers to monitor the next election for fraud.
The White House, which has come under fire over a New York Times story which accuses the Walken administration, specifically CIA Director Robert Bennett, of carrying out covert operations designed to keep N'konho in power, had no immediate comment on Mr. Danzi's death.

Who's In Charge?

The recent controversy surrounding the East Montrassa election scandal continues to plague the Walken Administration, with revelations that the Secretary of Defense's wife is listed as a non-executive director of a defense contractor that has supplied helicopters, tanks, and training for troops for the regime of East Montrassian president Joseph Paul N'Konho. This has raised the question of who exactly is minding the store in the administration, as there seems to be a growing divide between the CIA and the State Department over the East Montrassa situation. Earlier this morning, it was revealed that Secretary of State Arnold Vinick, who had been in Athens overseeing talks between Turkey and Greece, was called back to Washington early for a special briefing at which CIA director Robert Bennett was apparently present. According to sources, the two men had a "heated" discussion about East Montrassa, but perhaps the strangest detail to come out of the meeting was that President Walken himself was not in attendance and in fact has missed several White House briefings, relying instead on stand-ins such as Vice President Clark and Chief of Staff Jane Braun. Walken's health has been an issue in recent weeks, although he did appear at White House Fourth of July celebrations he has rarely been seen in public otherwise.

VINICK, SANTOS ARRIVE FOR OLYMPICS

PARIS-Secretary of State Arnold Vinick and his former employer and 2006 Presidential election rival Matthew Santos had a reunion as they arrived in Paris for the 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremonies. Mr. Vinick, who has reportedly been increasingly at odds over the Walken administration's support of East Montrassa president Joseph Paul N'Konho, said that meeting with Santos was like "old home week" and that he was there to enjoy the Games and represent the United States, not to discuss politics or policy.
For his own part, Matt Santos appeared to be in a relaxed mood, as the former President chatted with reporters and viewed the ceremony from the VIP section along with Vinick and the UK's William Morgan and Richard Samuels.

DOCTOR THREATENS TO NAME NAMES

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-Following arrest for his alleged role in the death of the wife of former Vice President Eric Baker, Doctor Felix Perez announced that he was "ready to name names" as his case goes forward while the investigation into the death of Dorothy Baker continues. His attorneys have asked that the charges against Perez in connection with Mrs. Baker's death be dropped, as while the medical examiner's office did determine that a medical overdose did contribute to her death, she was also suffering from what has been described as a severe case of pneumonia, and that her death has been changed from "homicide" to "undetermined" as a result.
"We are confident that Doctor Perez's reputation will be restored and his name cleared as we present evidence of his innocence to the court," Doctor Perez's attorneys said in a prepared statement.
In the meantime, Doctor Perez continues to be held as a "person of interest" in the case, with several other charges related to his practice-including his alleged relationship with Mayor Jackson Kennedy-still pending.

SEVERAL FALL ILL AT FUNDRAISER

Charleston, West Virginia-Several attendees, including two reporters for local news outlets, fell ill Friday evening during a speech by Ray Sullivan at a local republican fundraiser, according to a spokesperson from Camden Clark Hospital. The former governor and 2006 Republican vice presidential nominee was appearing on behalf of the local chapter of the GOP as part of its election year fundraising drive.
The victims, who included relatives of Senator Charles Oakley, are currently being treated for what has been called an outbreak of food poisoning by the Centers for Disease Control. As of Friday night most had been released, although a few-including a cousin of Senator Oakley and a reporter for the local NBS affiliate-were being kept for overnight observation as a precautionary measure, according to a spokesperson for the hospital.

ANTIGOVERNMENT PROTESTS ROCK EAST MONTRASSA

East Montrassa-Large antigovernment protests, led by a coalition of opposition groups that are normally opposed to each other, have grown in the capitol city since they began earlier today, observers report.
The demonstrators, who are calling for President Joseph Paul N'Konho to resign and allow new elections to take place, say that they are united by revelations that the Walken administration, through the CIA, apparently manipulated the 2011 elections in favor of the incumbent N'Konho. Among the allegations are accusations of human rights violations, including harsh interrogations of opposition leaders, imprisonment of members of opposition groups without charges or trial, and threats of retaliation against various ethnic tribal groups.
President N'Konho has denounced the protests as being manufactured by rival factions, outsiders, and "enemy infiltrators" from other countries, most notably the Central African Federation, with which East Monstrassa has had increasingly chilly relations since the assassination of CAF president Benjamin Boma. During a recent broadcast on state television and radio, N'Konho made a thinly veiled reference to the CAF in what he called "plots against his person," apparently referring to assassination attempts.
The CAF has denied any role in instigating the protests, or in alleged assassination plots against N'Konho.

Default Kennedy: Doctor Perez "Speaks For Himself"

Thread suggestion:

PITTSBURGH (AP)-In a press conference held late last night, Democratic Senate candidate Mayor Jackson Kennedy continued to deny any association with controversial doctor Felix Perez, saying that, when it came to the doctor's threat to release a list of patients that repotedly includes several high-profile names, Doctor Perez's allegations were "completely ufounded" and that "he speaks only for himself, not for the rest of the medical community, or anyone else in Pennsylvania, Washington, or anywhere else."
Mr. Kennedy's lead over Republican challenger and former actor Carlin Cassidy has grown in recent days as Mr. Kennedy's campaign continues to regroup following the allegations.

With Russell Out, Eyes Turn To Wilson

AUGUSTA, MAINE-Following former Vice President Robert "Bingo Bob" Russell's surprising announcement that he will not be seeking the Democratic nomination in 2014, attention has turned towards a potential new frontrunner-Wisconsin Senator Stephen Wilson, who has gained a great deal of influence as ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee, along with his membership in the Appropriations and Small Business Committees.
Wilson, 57, has remained coy about his own future in the race, although insiders say that Russell's decision will most likely influence him towards running. If he does jump in, he will join an already crowded field of possible contenders that includes Wisconsin Governor Mark Kotzenmoyer and former Virginia Senator Brian Cambridge.

CYPRUS-Authorities here are fuming after a group of Turkish activists landed on the Eastern shore of the island, according to reports from the Cyprus government information office. Greek officials in Athens have also sent complaints to Turkey and have requested a meeting with the Turkish ambassador to Cyprus for an explanation.

The activists-who claim to be part of a nonaligned group that seeks greater ties between Cyprus and Turkey, as well as to address ongoing territorial claims stemming from the 2010 Greco-Turkish war-appeared on the island within the past two days, according to local media reports. The dispute over the activists and their intentions has caused tensions between Turkey and Greece to increase, prompting the Walken administration to send America's ambassadors to Turkey and Greece to Athens and Ankara in an effort to mediate the dispute. There is no word on whether or not Secretary of State Arnold Vinick himself will again be sent to the region. Mr. Vinick will reportedly be in Africa meeting with President Jean-Luc Mugamba of the Central African Federation and representatives from East Montrassa to deal with increasing tensions between those two countries stemming from accusations by East Monstrassa president Joseph-Paul N'Konho of "interference" in his country's domestic affairs, including recent alleged assassination plots, which the CAF has denied any involvement in.
